Ethereum Merge happened around one month ago. The Merge attracted tremendous interest across the cryptocurrency industry and the technology space. Research by CoinGecko now shows that Singapore was the most interested country in the Merge based on search terms associated with the event.

Global interest in the Ethereum Merge

The Ethereum Merge happened on September 15. The Merge event saw the Ethereum blockchain transition from proof of work to proof of stake. The event was termed one of the most important in web 3.0 &crypto history, as such a transition on a network as large as Ethereum has never happened before.

Research by CoinGecko sought to rank the top eight countries that showed the most interest in the Ethereum Merge. The research analyzed the English search terms linked to the Merge after the Gray Glacier Hard Fork that happened on June 30, 2022.

The research findings portray that Merge received the highest interest in Singapore, with a total search score of 377. Switzerland and Canada held the second position with a search score of 286. The other five countries are Germany, United States, the Netherlands, Australia, and Turkey.

In these top 8 countries, PoW-related searches were 169% higher than PoS-related searches. Ethereum and ETH searches were also 40% higher than searches for Ethereum Classic and ETH Classic.

Singapore was the most interested country in the Ethereum Merge

Singapore’s population had the highest search levels for phrases such as “Ethereum Merge,” “ETH Classic,” and “Ethereum.” While Switzerland came in second place, the country had the highest searches for “ETH” and “ETH Merge.” Canada, which tied with Switzerland in second place, had the highest rank for searches for the term “ETH PoW.”

Germany, United States, and Turkey had the highest search levels for the “Ethereum PoW” term. At the same time, Netherlands and Australia ranked as the third and fourth countries in terms of Merge interest.

The eight countries that topped this study contribute to the global search levels for the “ETH Merge” and the “Ethereum Merge.” These countries comprised 16% of the total search score that was related to the search.

In the top eight countries, the searches related to “Proof of Work” have increased by 169% compared to searches related to “Proof of Stake.” Moreover, the searches for “Ethereum” and “ETH” are 40% higher than the searches for “Ethereum Classic and “ETH Classic.”

The COO and co-founder of CoinGecko, Bobby Ong, commented on the report saying that a week before the Merge happened, interest in the event was at an all-time high. Additionally, the effects of the event were expected to be felt across the entire cryptocurrency sector.

The top eight countries with the highest interest in the Merge seem to comprise countries with a robust Ethereum community. This could be why these countries had the highest search scores in the study.

While the Ethereum Merge was a major success that reduced Ethereum’s energy demand by 99%, it eliminated miners on the network. Several miners wanted to continue mining on the Ethereum PoW version, creating contentious hard forks after the Merge. Therefore, it is not surprising that search terms such as “ETH PoW” and “Ethereum PoW” have been trending over the past two months.
